(‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ This synthesis is supposed to be based on South Side book by Natalie Moore Chapters 1 through 4) Synthesis: something that is made by combining different things (such as ideas, styles, etc.) A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on material in several texts or across one text to integrate information. It is a standard form of academic and workplace writing. For example, analyses can synthesize and apply several theories to a case study in psychology. A research paper in any discipline synthesizes multiple sources. Argumentative essays synthesize information, theories, etc. into a claim or position. In the workplace, professionals synthesize information all the time. Newspaper and magazine articles synthesize primary and secondary sources; position papers and policy briefs compare solutions for solving problems in government and business; memos and letters synthesize ideas, events, and/or proposals. Your first synthesis will use material from The South Side. You will identify several topics that are discussed in chapters one through four. Then you will compare and contrast how the different chapters treat the topics you have selected. This essay is basically a summary of material in the text that you have selected and rearranged in order to focus it more narrowly and bring it together for a reader who has not read Moore’s book but who wants to learn about some of the topics she presents. Purpose of the assignment for this class: To promote mature academic thinking; to practice using quotations and paraphrases; to develop and practice summarizing and synthesizing. Step one: Brainstorm topics that we find in several chapters of Moore’s text. You will choose several of these topics that you will then synthesize into an essay. Step two: Develop a list or an outline of which topics you will synthesize and the main points from the different chapters that address that topic. On this list/outline, note the page numbers where you find these points so that later on you can document them in your draft. This essay will use a lot of paraphrasing and quoting, so it will be important to keep good notes that give you the information and page numbers you will need for accurate documentation. Step three: Start drafting your synthesis. Note that you might choose two topics and each topic will receive two or three paragraphs of attention. You might choose more topics and deal with each topic in one or two paragraphs. What is not useful, however, is to treat the issues so that one paragraph is devoted to one chapter and the next paragraph is devoted to another chapter. The purpose of the assignment is to synthesize material; therefore, each body paragraph will contain material from more than one chapter. Step four: As you have been drafting, you have been identifying passages from South S‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ide that you believe are worth quoting. We choose quotations based on how important the info is and how well-said it is. Step five: As you have been drafting, you have been using transition phrases such as “…in contrast to…”, etc. These transition phrases are simple, but when used well they give an essay coherence (aka “flow”) and a professional quality. Step six: After drafting your essay think about a thesis and an introduction. Since this is an explanatory synthesis, not an argument, your thesis will describe or explain what you will do in the essay. Your thesis might sound something like this: In this essay, I will describe how Bryan Stevenson’s text, Just Mercy, discusses how racial bias in the justice system has influenced mass incarceration and contributed to a system in which thousands of innocent people are imprisoned. (please note: I’m providing an example from a text that is not required reading for our class this semester, for demonstration purposes). Another example of a possible thesis that explores several topics could be something like: In this essay, I will analyze how Moore argues that the practices of redlining targets people of color and the poor, creating a new caste system. For your conclusion, think about what we learn when we compare and contrast the material in your essay. Compare/contrast syntheses always need a point, and a conclusion is a great place to make it. However, you may also include it in the thesis paragraph. The point of the comparison/contrast is the new understanding we get when we put some info next to other info in new ways. When you, for example, compare the history of the neighborhoods Moore has researched and described, what do we learn about our current culture? About racial bias in our own city and state? About conscious or unconscious racism within and outside of our current welfare system? In the conclusion you can move away from Moore’s text and into your own perspective about the importance of the material. Step seven: Revise and develop your draft. Edit your draft. Proofread your draft. Please note that those three things are all different stages in the writing process. Grading criteria and essay goals: Does the essay demonstrate an accurate understanding of the material in South Side? Is the organization a true synthesis of material and not a chapter-by-chapter summary of information? Are the quotations and paraphrases effective? For example, does the essay use a variety of signal verbs? Is the documentation accurate? Is the paraphrasing complete, avoiding plagiarism? Are the quotations usefully framed? Are the paragraphs well-focused and coherent with useful transition phrases? Does the intro contain a descriptive thesis? Does the conclusion usefully wrap up the material?
