The best answers will draw on information from the lectures and videos to support their main points. For example, if you’re answering the socioeconomic inequality question, you’ll want to reference the “racial wealth gap” video, which explains how government policies helped create that gap.
1) Explain the circumstances that led to the Civil Rights Movement. That is, what were
some of the unfair conditions and laws that the movement was protesting? And what
factors contributed to the mobilization of African Americans into the most successful
social movement in American history?
2) Explain the causes and consequences of the Voting Rights Act. That is, what led to
passing the Voting Rights Act? And how has the Voting Rights Act affected minority
politics?
3) Explain the causes and consequences of the 1965 Immigration Act. That is, what led to
passing the act to pass? And how has the Immigration Act affected minority politics?
4) What were the goals and tactics of the empowerment/nationalist movements of the late
1960s and 1970s? Why weren’t pluralism and the tactics of the civil rights movement
enough to achieve these goals?
5) Explain how government policies led to racial and ethnic socioeconomic inequality? That
is, what were some of the government policies that created the racial wealth gap and
other forms of socioeconomic inequality? And how are the consequences of those
policies still affecting racial and ethnic minorities today?
