Guidance The word ‘government’ can refer to the UK government, or to the various national governments within the UK. If you are discussing a government policy that is only applicable in a particular part of the UK, please make this clear in your TMA. Note that these TMA questions are made up of two questions, so make sure you address both of them. • The first question asks you to show that you understand the reasons why parenting / families have been and remain a focus for government policy. • The second question asks you to discuss how governments provide support, and is an opportunity for a critical discussion of the different ways in which governments both support and regulate parenting / families. In this second part of your TMA, you should include reference to some examples of services provided for parenting / families from the KE322 learning guides. Your tutor will be assessing your understanding of what you have read in the module and your ability to select relevant material for the question. For this TMA you need to demonstrate that you understand what policy is and why policies that affect parents / families are an important part of government. In this TMA, tutors will also be looking specifically at whether you are able to demonstrate your ability to critically discuss these questions, and whether you are able to apply the methods, concepts and theories taught in the module. Don’t forget to reflect on the feedback provided by your tutor on your first three TMAs. In addition to the module material, you should refer to two additional sources that you have found for yourself. Think carefully about what is a good source; dictionaries or popular newspapers are probably not good sources to use. Finding and using good sources will also be important in preparation for your EMA. Learning outcomes This TMA will help you to achieve the following learning outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding • KU1?Systematic, extensive and specialist knowledge and understanding of children, young‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ people, parents and families, some of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of the subject / discipline / sector. • KU2?The theories, research and contextual analysis which informs policy and practice with children, young people, parents and families. • KU4?The ways in which ethnicity, age, geography, class, disability, gender and sexuality affect children, young people, parents and families, and what creates or challenges inequalities. Cognitive Skills • CS1?Critically and systematically analyse and evaluate concepts, theories, values, policies, legislation and practice related to children, young people, parenting and families. • CS2?Critically analyse contexts, conditions and processes that lead to effective work with children, young people, parents and families. • CS3?Select and critically analyse data from different sources to present discussion, evidence and arguments. Key Skills • KS1?Study independently and purposefully to identify and critically evaluate relevant information from a range of sources. • KS2?Communicate accurately and clearly, using the conventions of academic writing, and using a range of digital methods for a range of purposes. • KS3?Organise and synthesise qualitative and quantitative data, including competing arguments and opinions, presenting findings in order to review, consolidate and extend own knowledge and understanding. Practical and/or Professional Skills • PPS1?Demonstrate a critical awareness of personal, ethical and professional responsibilities, taking account of different approaches to professional standards across a range of contexts. Your essay needs to be correctly referenced.
